About the Author MARY ADAMEK is Clinical Professor of Music Therapy at The University of Iowa. She specializes in music therapy and music education with special populations, in particular, students with behavior disorders and students with autism. She has published several clinical articles and book chapters on these topics and has offered music in special education workshops around the country. She has received a Collegiate Teaching Award from The University of Iowa and a Service Award from the American Music Therapy Association. She presently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Music Therapy and Music Therapy Perspectives, and is a former president of the American Music Therapy Association. ALICE-ANN DARROW is Irvin Cooper Professor of Music at Florida State University. Her teaching and research interests are teaching music to special populations, nonverbal communication, and the role of music in deaf culture. Related to these topics, she has been the recipient of eighteen federal, university, or corporate grants, and has published numerous monographs, research articles, and book chapters. She is editor of the text Introduction to Approaches in Music Therapy. She presently serves on the editorial boards of the Bulletin for the Council on Research in Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, and Music Therapy Perspectives, and has been the recipient of research and clinical practice awards from the American Music Therapy Association.
